As the prevalence and incidence of complex wounds continue to rise, the need for skilled clinicians is increasing. Wound care is by nature an interprofessional specialty, leading to challenges in developing a standardized curriculum. Meanwhile, increasing competition for limited healthcare resources means that securing funding for wound management education and research is becoming more and more difficult. Increasing efficiency in translation of basic research findings into clinical solutions is paramount to addressing this discrepancy. Critical to this mission is a strategic approach for educating the next generation of wound care leaders and the development of global networks for basic and clinical wound care research.
